Proteus penneri

Proteus penneri is one of the three Proteus bacteria that is humanly pathogenic. Proteus spp are members of the enterobacteriaciae, and members of the Proteus-Providencia group and are oxidase-negative, catalase-positive, urease-positive (Salmonella are urease-negative), may be motile and ‘swarm’ on agar plates.

Proteus penneri (and P. mirabilis) are indole-negative, unlike P. vulgaris.

Pathogenicity is similar to other Proteus spp. but reports are limited. Case reports indicate P. penneri causes urospesis and pyelonephritis.
